One Act Plays| The War Effort | | Author | HAILS, Christopher - Other Plays by this Author - Contact Author | | Format | One-act. | | Synopsis | In 1945, Winston Churchill and Arthur Eckersley stood shoulder to shoulder, celebrating their finest hour, ( but not a lot of people know that). Who the hell is Arthur Eckersley you might well ask? Read on.
It is now 1963 and Arthur, a Town Clerk, is having matrimonial and sanitation problems, as his house is the first in the street to have an upstairs toilet. His wife, Molly is concerned about the gravitational pull of the earth and is also severely curbing Arthur's marital activities.
As if things couldn't get any worse, a young man arrives claiming to be his long lost son, conceived out of the urgency of war. Their daugher, Pauline also a product of the war effort appears not to be Arthur's, but his brother Harry's.
As other skeletons are resurrected from the war years, it becomes clear that Arthur is the unsung hero of the Second World War. Brother Harry is also in for a shock, as the siege in next door's outside toilet is resolved. | | Information | | | Cast | 2F 2M (minimum 4) Arthur (40's) Molly (40's) Pauline (teens)Harry (40's) | | Production | A Sixties style living room is the key to the production. The ideals and values of the era are reinforced by the period's characters. Arthur the downtrodden husband and his nagging wife Molly are really not the stereotypical characters we are led to believe in. Pauline a child of the sixties, is escaping the dark days of the post war years. Harry's problem echo an era to come. This is a light hearted comdy drama, with a tinge of sadness we all must have experienced, no matter what the era. Any region of the UK is suitable, however ideally "Up North" bodes well. | | Status | Available for performance |
